Alan Charles Wilder (born 1 June 1959) is an English musician, composer, arranger, record producer and former member of the electronic band Depeche Mode from 1982 to 1995. Since his departure from the band, the musical project called Recoil became his primary musical enterprise, which initially started as a side project to Depeche Mode in 1986.

Alan was a member of Depeche Mode from 1982 until 1995 when he became dissatisfied with the working practices of the group. He was later asked if he would like to join Crawley-born Robert Smith of The Cure. "But I was looking to get out of bands," he says.

Recoil is a musical project created by English musician and former Depeche Mode member Alan Wilder. Essentially a solo venture, Recoil began whilst Wilder was still in Depeche Mode as an outlet for his experimental, less pop-oriented compositions. Once he announced his departure from the group in 1995, Recoil became Wilder's primary musical.

Alan Wilder's decades in the music industry saw him go from studio assistant to session keyboard player, but it was his 14 years as a member of Depeche Mode where he really honed his skills. Recoil emerged in the mid-80s as an antidote to the demands of Depeche Mode as Wilder explains: "I always kept an open mind about what the Recoil project could be - allowing it to head off in any.

Wilder was a virtuoso with keys, but as much an engineer as a musician; willing and able to do the unglamorous "screwdriver work" in various studios around Europe that made Depeche Mode a stadium-conquering band and influence on musical mavericks like Trent Reznor.

In the '90s the band weathered the rise of grunge — which rendered synthesizers and drum machines temporarily taboo — as well as the departure of the keyboardist Alan Wilder and Gahan's.

After fan speculation, Depeche Mode have shut down any suggestion that former keyboardist Alan Wilder is going to rejoin the group. The goth rock hitmakers were left as a duo after bassist/keyboardist Andy Fletcher's death in 2022.

Even though they weren't on the best of terms at the time, yes, after many years of friendship, that can still hurt. But yeah, Alan's departure was a big loss for Depeche Mode. And people always seem to forget the fact that Alan said he didn't want to spend his whole music career on "a pop band.". He was going to leave anyway at some point.

On 1 June 1995, Alan Wilder announced he was departing Depeche Mode after thirteen years as a key member. During his tenure from 1982 to June 1995, Wilder's musical vision and attention to detail were integral to the development and ultimate success of the group.
