This lens has an odd, blue looking ghost, like half of a 7 blade aperture that shows up opposite of the sun when the sun is at the edge of, or in the image. It's large and will mess up your shot, so pay attention. The ghosting control is not as good as the Sony 50mm F/1.4.

Vignetting is surprisingly low. f/5.6: noticeably better than f/4, most of the image is very sharp, only the far corners are unsharp f/11: very good sharpness across the frame. Flare resistance is average and CA pronounced. A rather heavy lens with integrated filters and lens hood. Built quality is excellent

Don't have a 55mm f/1.7 -- all mine are 50mm. The 55mm is a bit older and seems to flare a bit more from various reviews , Slightly longer focal length tends to improve bokeh. The newer 50mm MD version uses some plastic, so focus isn't quite as silky. It's also smaller and lighter, taking a 49mm filter instead of 55mm.

Minolta's MD 50mm F/1.4 Might Be The Ultimate Standard Legacy Lens

It feel sturdy enough. The focus ring is smooth and the aperture clicks nicely. One interesting thing to note is that while some f1.8 lenses have a f2 stop, this one jumps directly to f2.8. The only compaint I have on this lens is that with time the lettering on my copy… HOLD THE PRESSES.

Minolta 50mm F/1.4 vs F/1.7 . Hi all, I'm currently using a 50mm f/2.2 lens that came with my Minolta x-370 and have considered getting another lens that could perhaps be better for lower light or indoor photos. I've noticed the f/1.7 lenses are a bit cheaper on Ebay than the f/1.4 lenses, I was curious of the pros and cons to the two and what.

Now I have two 50mm f/1.7 MD lenses and an older 55mm f/1.7 MC. My understanding is that the 50mm f/1.7 MC and MD Rokkor-X lenses were the same optically but that the MD Rokkor-X had better coating. The last lens, the plain MD, may also be the same optically but it is in a less heavy mount. I find that the 50mm f/1.7 MD is extremely sharp.
